Many galaxies have similar shapes. Some of the most common are elliptical galaxies. These are shaped like flattened spheres. Spiral galaxies have arms attached to a central bulge. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy. A barred spiral galaxy has a flat bar running through the central bulge. Its spiral arms wind away from the ends of the bar. Irregular galaxies have no definite shape.
